Josh Tatofi "Slow Rolling Sunshine" | API Heritage Month

Josh Tatofi Music is a renowned Hawaiian musician known to many fans as the “Polynesian Luther Vandross.” His latest project blends the Island vibes he’s more often recognized for with a newer “Country Soul” sound.

“I do remember being in one of the writing sessions in Nashville, and for the first time, it didn’t feel like I was trying something new. It felt like I was tapping into something familiar,” Josh says. “The way they approach storytelling there, it reminded me a lot of how we express ourselves back home in Hawaii. It’s honest, it’s emotional, and it comes from real experiences.”

Josh sees this chapter as a natural expansion since the stripped-back, guitar-driven sound is foundational to country music and his own creative process. [“It’s] something that’s always been part of us as Pacific Island people. The ability to evolve, to carry our stories into new spaces, and still stay deeply connected to where we come from.”

“If my music can open doors, or help people feel seen in a space they don’t always see themselves in, that’s something I don’t take lightly,” Josh says reflecting on #APIHeritageMonth. “For me, it’s about carrying where I come from with pride, while also showing that our stories can connect far beyond where we’re from. The more we stay true to who we are, the more universal the music becomes.”
